Quality of Life for Dogs and Cats

We recommend testing your animal for heartworm disease

A tall, vertical shape with straight sides and semicircular ends, resembling a capsule or pill, outlined in black on a white background—ideal for signage at a pet clinic or veterinarian's office.
The image is a solid light gray background with no visible objects, text, or people—ideal for use in Animal Hospital or Vet settings seeking a neutral backdrop.

Slide A close-up of a greyhound dog with a white and gray coat, wearing a blue collar, sits alert at the vet. One ear is upright, the other flopped over. The softly blurred background hints at a TV and furniture. A young girl sits at an open doorway, hugging a small black dog as they gaze out toward a bright picket fence and garden—capturing a quiet moment that could be seen in any caring veterinarian’s home. The softly lit floor gleams in the foreground. Heartworm Prevention Understanding your pet’s quality of life can be one of the most emotional and difficult aspects of pet ownership—especially as they age or face chronic illness. Unlike humans, pets can’t tell us how they feel, and many animals instinctively hide pain or discomfort. This makes it incredibly hard for even the most observant owners to know when their pet’s quality of life is declining.

There is no single answer to determine quality of life. It often involves looking at many small changes over time—such as appetite, mobility, interaction, comfort, and overall happiness. What matters most is how your pet is experiencing daily life, and whether they are still able to enjoy the things that once made them happy.

At Red Oak Animal Hospital, our doctors are here to guide and support you through this process. We take the time to understand your pet’s unique needs and lifestyle and can work closely with you to assess their comfort, health, and behavior. Our goal is to help you make informed, compassionate decisions that are right for both your pet and your family.

  • The HHHHHMM Scale: A simple tool that helps evaluate Hurt, Hunger, Hydration, Hygiene, Happiness, Mobility, and More good days than bad.
  • Lap of Love’s Quality of Life Scale: A detailed scoring system designed to help pet parents reflect on their pet’s daily wellbeing.
  • Journaling or using a calendar to track good and bad days can be helpful in noticing patterns or changes over time.
You don’t have to make these decisions alone. If you’re unsure about your pet’s quality of life or wondering what next steps to take, we’re here to talk, assess, and help you every step of the way.
